Folktale Week Cover

Folktale week was created by Jennifer M Potter, a well know children's book illustrator.

To capture the enchanting moment of discovery a child experiences when introduced to the worlds of folk tales was the thesis I aimed towards in the creation of this illustration. A sense of wonder is often lost as we grow older, but is so deeply ingrained in the experience of story-telling that we as humans never grow tired of telling stories. I used a textured approach to the rendering of forms in this illustration, while trying to capture the atmospheric sensation of a dimly lit forest.

Folktale Week "Woods"

Folktale week was created by Jennifer M Potter, a well know children's book illustrator.

There is something true about the terror of the story of Hansel and Gretel, it touches on child abuse, abandonment, famine, and the power of children to survive. Of course it is Gretel, the sister, who has the agency to save her brother from the witch.

I applied a picture-book style to this illustration, and a sense of scale of the forest in relation to the children to emphasise their 'aloneness'.

Becoming Toroa

FOR THE NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL JOURNAL

This illustration was created for Lift Education for the national New Zealand School Journal. It sat alongside a poem about a boy looking out at a flying albatross (Toroa in Maori), as he wound down a hill in the back seat of a car. It was a pleasure to work sith Simon Waterfield and his team.
